Overdose Awareness Event
Overdose prevention is a crucial part of the work that Southwest Community Health Center does for its community. In the honor of International Overdose Awareness Day, Southwest held an event to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths. SWCHC provided free HIV testing, NARCAN training, MAT education, free giveaways and refreshments.
This event brought the community together to help learn about overdose awareness and ways you can save someone's life if you suspect they're struggling. Naloxone, also known by its brand name Narcan, is a possibly life saving treatment for overdoses. In just a couple of minutes, Naloxone can return regular breathing to someone whose breathing has either stopped or slowed during an overdose. Making naloxone readily accessible in the community gives a life saving tool to assist individuals experiencing an overdose.
Connecticut alone experienced 1,342 overdose-related deaths in 2023.

Every person's life is valuable. If you or a loved one struggles with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), having naloxone on hand can prevent tragedy. In the state of Connecticut, many pharmacies have naloxone and you can obtain it without seeing a doctor.
